  • The Fashionista Event of the Year!

The Fashionista Event of the Year!

The Fashionista event of the year – that is what one of the attendees called the Eighth Annual Silk Threads Charity Gala on Oct 14th. The event benefited the Asia Center at University of Dallas, and was held at the new Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center on UTD campus.

The morning started with an interview of Ruby Bhandari, CEO of Silk Threads, on Fox4 News, talking about the event and giving a sneak peek of what to expect.

The evening weather was perfect for the gala – clear skies, and pleasant – and the location was sparkling. The decor, provided by Decor by Faiza, was fabulous and matched the colorful theme – which was the influence of fashion on cinema. This year again saw a sold-out crowd of Dallas’ who’s-who come out dressed in their finest.

By 6:30 pm, everyone was in place, with volunteers and wait staff looking sharp dressed in black, the drink sponsors Kruto vodka, Ironroot Republic Gin and Bourbon, and Topo Chico, as well as food sponsors The Gardens Restaurant and Bombay Chopstix ready and waiting for the guests. A dessert table was setup inside the hall, featuring Indian sweets from Royal Sweets and pastries from Delicious Cakes.

The VIP reception started at 7 pm, with guests mingling, photographers busily clicking, and bloggers live-blogging. Quite a few of the local media personalities were present from organizations like Fox, ABC, TV Asia and Dallas Morning News.

The show itself was divided into multiple segments, showing the progression of fashion from 70’s to modern day, and the influence of Hollywood on Indian cinema to begin with, and how the trend has slightly reversed nowadays. Over 40 models from different agencies, including Bella Modeling School, participated in the show. Ruby Bhandari, the Chief Designer of Silk Threads, created different looks to highlight this underlying theme, and each of her pieces drew appreciation from the crowd.

The Master of Ceremonies was LeeAnn Locken, the star of Bravo TV’s Real Housewives of Dallas. The show was kicked off by a mesmerizing song by a local singer, Priyanka. LeeAnn kept the crowd entertained, as the models changed between segments.

Terry Gajraj, the famous Indo-Carribbean singer from New York, performed a song – his take on the famous “Om Shanti Om” song from a Bollywood movie, which really got the crowd in the mood. Terry was brought to Dallas by the Platinum Sponsor of the Gala, Pete Persaud Productions, which is also shooting a music video with Terry in Dallas.

The final segment was themed “The Monsoon Wedding“, which showcased the men’s and women’s bridal line from Ruby Bhandari. All the pieces in the line were head-turners, with attendees mentally booking some of the pieces for themselves.

The party wasn’t over yet. Outspoken Visions Entertainment and DJ Raj from Stereo Nation LA took over from here, and brought the crowd to their feet – dancing away till it was closing time!

This event raised more funds than any of Silk Threads’ previous Galas – and all proceeds are being used to setup a scholarship at UTD. As Sanjeeb Samanta, one of the guests, said “Great event!

I know it takes a lot to put these together and the amount of planning that goes into it. Your team did great and the designs and show was impressive. As an alum of UTD, thanks for supporting one of our programs. As an active leader in the DFW non-profit community, thank you for your compassion and generosity every year to support different causes and groups.

We need more people in the DFW community with your heart and will”!

Ruby Bhandari, CEO of Silk Threads said, ” Thanks to all our guests, volunteers and sponsors for their effort to provide educational opportunities for the needy. We are amazed at the support, and this is what keeps us trying to raise the bar for our events every year”.

“If you have a vision for an outfit, go to Ruby…”

Today’s interview is with customer Jaimie Anand, of Jaimie Anand Interiors.
ST – What was the special occasion you were trying to find dresses for? What designs did you have in mind?
JA – The special occasion was my younger brother’s wedding, which was in Vicksburg Mississippi.
Design concepts I had in mind were modern chic, elegant and trendy.
    – What brought you to Silk Threads?
I came to Ruby last year to see some of her stuff, after I had heard how great she was from friends.  I ended up buying an outfit and several saris.  One of the outifts I wore during one of the wedding events.
When I got ready to start wedding shopping, I knew right away I wanted to go to Ruby for some of my outfits.
    – What do you like the most about Silk Threads and its staff?
The staff was extremely helpful and accommodating to what exactly I needed.  Ruby made it a point to have the outfits be perfect to the way I wanted and went out of her way to make that happen.
    – Any tips for our readers?
I would say if you have a vision for an outfit, go to Ruby, she will help tweak it to be unique and work with you to create a stunning look.
I will definitely be buying from her again in the future.
    Thank you Jaimie…you looked gorgeous!

Crow 31 Days: I Have a Few Rubies in My Closet

by Amy Lewis Hofland, Executive Director, Crow Collection of Asian Art

(For those of you who don’t know Amy, she is the smiling face at the Crow Collection museum in the Dallas Arts District, a hidden gem. They have several extraordinary pieces in their permanent collection, including a red sandstone wall from a fort in Rajasthan, India! They host several visiting artists from all over Asia several times a year, and have programs like wellness and yoga classes. The location can also be rented for exclusive events. We have been fortunate to work with them over the years, and Amy and her team have always been gracious and accommodating.

This surprise, unedited, blog post floored us…we love you, Amy!)

Her name is Ruby Bhandari. She is part lightning bug, part butterfly, part unicorn: you’ve never met anyone like her. Mysteriously she never sleeps, and miraculously she can draw something in Dallas, Texas and within hours, a sewing machine in New Delhi, India is bring it to form. Ruby is magic.

I met Ruby and her amazing husband Raj for the second time though their magnanimous offer to create a fashion show for our members at the museum over 15 years ago. We are convinced we met years earlier on the campus of the University of Texas as we both served on the Cabinet of College Councils. It is the kind of friendship where–when we met “officially” we all felt like we’d known each other forever.

Ruby is a dear friend, but Ruby is also an accomplished fashion designer and entrepreneur. She started her company Silk Threads while still as student at UT. She is the epitome of tenacity.

Ruby works two shifts for two time zones: telecommuting with India has it’s challenges. She fills her day meeting with clients in Dallas, working on her many distribution projects, designing the next season and building the business.

Walking into the showroom is better than Alice in Wonderland. Ruby has a team of devoted employees–and she pops in and out between calls and clients to offer a style or a color: she knows how to create something ravishing.

Her confidence is magnetic: I’ve walked in planning just to stop by and say hello. I’ve walked out with mid-riff bearing sarees, jewelry, salwar kameez, gowns fit for royalty and two tunics commissioned for the opening of our sculpture garden.

She is a marketing genius, a talented businesswoman and simply impossible to say “no” to. Once you see the Ruby, you are part of a marvelous elixir: an intoxicating concoction of joy, glamour and fun. Ruby dressed me for an engagement party, several local galas, a fashion show and several evenings with the Asia Society at the Tiger Ball in Houston. She even dressed me for the opening of an exhibition we supported in New Delhi-sending her cousin to our hotel for a last-minute fitting. Ruby was thousands of miles away on the phone: designing by satellite.

Ruby’s success has been earned: over 25 years of grit and courage. She is recognized as one of the first designers to bring Indian fashion to the region. Raj has been a guiding light in their partnership and in their business. This is one of my favorite Power Couples in Dallas.

A visit to the Silk Threads showroom will not disappoint. Plan to spend a few hours sifting through the gowns, and do not be afraid to try something bold. Be like Alice in this wonderland and drink it all up. I promise you’ll walk out smiling. And you just might find a few Rubies in your closet, too.

Ruby Made Us Into Gems – first time introduction to Indian Fashion in Dallas!

As Dallasites, we all know about the upcoming “The Pin Show 2017” fashion show, and that Ruby Bhandari of Silk Threads is one of the featured designers. Ahead of the show, we wanted to know more about Indian-inspired fashion and share our Silk Threads experience –  read on for our experience…

In the minds of many, there is a distinct cultural divide when it comes to fashion, but Ruby is determined to break that mold. She’s infusing Eastern trends and designs into Western fashion, and we love it.

We were thrilled to have the opportunity for an exclusive look at the Silk Threads boutique. While there, we learned a lot about the different categories of clothing, such as everyday wear, traditional pieces, or special occasions, like weddings. Here’s just a peak at our fun:

    Traditional Indian Designs

Not having the cultural background and exposure to garments inspired by Indian culture, we jumped at the chance to try on gorgeous pieces for ourselves. From the beginning, Ruby gave us insight into our body types, helping us figure out what works best with our unique shapes. With expertise in customized couture dresses based on individuals’ bodies, Ruby made us feel beautiful in our own ways.

Amshi and Rachel both opted for pieces from the Ethnicwear line. Amshi (in red) in a Lehenga, and Rachel (in white) in a Salwar Kameez.

    Bridal Wear

What girl doesn’t love weddings? Upon finding out that Silk Threads had an entire room devoted to bridal fashion, we all made a bee-line to that room, and it. was. gorgeous! There was everything from traditional Eastern bridal garments to out-of-the box and beautifully ornate, intricate designs, to more Westernized Indian bridal garments.

While we didn’t try on any of the bridal collection, we did get to experience just how heavy the elaborate gowns are (full arm workout worthy). Here we are holding three of the heaviest pieces in the whole store – all a part of the bridalcollection.

    Ruby B Collection

For the Westerner who doesn’t get the occasion to don a custom traditional piece, the Ruby B Collection of Tunics and Dresses are to die for. Whether you are looking for a chic cocktail dress or a unique piece to pair with jeans, there is seriously something for everyone.

Sarah loved this piece she’s showcasing so much that she couldn’t part with it, and it has found a new home in her closet.

    Couture Meets Confidence

For a few hours, we were able to play dress up with the real deal. Not only did we feel like a better version of ourselves, but we left with more confidence and creative insight when it comes to our style going forward.

Events that depicted our relationship – #RealBride Roshni

Bride and Groom: Roshni Bedi & Jaspreet Singh

    Location of the wedding: Dallas

    Photographer: MnMfoto

    1. What was your vision for your wedding?

Our vision for our wedding was simple and elegant. We wanted to preserve as much Indian tradition as possible while still adding a whimsical and romantic element to it. With the help of our vendors, and most of all, our parents, we were really able to put together a series of events that depicted our relationship and our vision for the wedding very well.

    2. What was the most magical or memorable part of your day?

For us, the moment after the ceremony

when we first looked at each other as husband and wife was very special. It just felt like everything came together at that one moment: all the months of planning, the years of long distance, and all the anticipation leading up to it. It was what we had been waiting for, to finally share our lives together as husband and wife. Of course, we can’t forget our reception. Enjoying those moments with our close friends and family who came from all over the world just to celebrate us was so much fun and something we will never forget.

    3. Why did you choose your wedding/reception dress from Silk Threads?

Jaspreet has known Ruby & Raj for a long time and she is a family friend. Jaspreet’s mom has worked with Ruby for quite some time as well. So, when it was time to buy outfits for our wedding it was our first instinct to go to Silk Threads. Picking the outfits for the wedding is a stressful process so it was important for us to go to someone we can trust and whose designs we loved. Silk Threads fulfilled both of those criterion.

Thank you Roshni & Jaspreet, and congratulations again! (p.s We loved all the wedding functions!)

  • The World’s First Bridal Shower!

    The World’s First Bridal Shower!

There are quite a few traditions most brides and grooms know about – exchanging the rings, throwing the rice, throwing the bouquet, etc. – but may not know how they got started.

A little bit of research (and our bridal customers at Silk Threads) tells us the following about the most common ones:

    • White dress – a trend started by Queen Victoria in 1840 by wearing a lavish trimmed white gown at her wedding…
    • Throwing rice – to shower the newly weds with fertility!
    • The rings – symbolizes eternity, as a circle has no beginning or end
    • Giving away the bride – comes from a time of arranged marriages (yes, that happened in western societies too!), where the daughter was considered as the father’s “property”
    • Identical dresses of bridesmaids – to protect the bride and groom from evil spirits

But if you are South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, etc.), there’s a whole additional set of traditions which comes into play. If you have seen Bollywood movies or some TV shows (see our post on how Bollywood is impacting the modern wedding), you’d be curious about some of the customs you see going on during these weddings.. (Well, you are not alone – even we wonder sometimes!)

So to satisfy all those inquiring minds, we wanted to start a discussion around some of the events and traditions you may see at South Asian weddings.

First of all, wedding functions (which can be 3-6) differ from different regions and cultures within South Asia, as well as different religions. At each of the functions, there are different traditions followed. In addition, its not just the brides and grooms getting married, but their whole families are involved in the process.

A couple of our favorite pre-wedding functions (common to most South Asian cultures) are the Mehendi and Sangeet events. Depending on the culture and budget, they may even be combined. In this post, we will focus on just this function, and continue the series in other posts.

Mehendi or the paste from Henna leaves (and mehndi tattoos) has been made popular by music artists like Beyonce’, Gwen Stefani and Madonna, but its origin is thousands of years old – dating back to the 15th century, when the Mughal rules brought the mehndi plants to India.

First a turmeric paste (called Haldi)  is applied to the bride’s face, hands and feet and then the application of Mehndi begins.

In most cases, skilled mehndi artists come to the event and apply various designs to the bride and her guests. Sometimes even initials or the name of the groom are hidden in the mehndi design on the bride.

A common belief is that if the mehndi color is very deep after washing, the groom loves the bride a lot. In addition, it is also believed that since this would be the last night the bride would spend as part of her birth family, she should spend it having fun with her family and friends.

Most of the time, the Mehndi ceremony is accompanied by music and dancing – sometimes there are two different events – one from the groom’s side and one from the bride’s side – but more and more, these are being combined. Thanks to the Bollywood influence, there are elaborate choreographed dance sequences performed by both the bride and groom’s friends and families. If you haven’t experienced one yet, we highly recommend attending one – will leave a lasting, colorful impression…

As a recent article put it, the closest analogy to the Mehndi Ceremony in the West is the Bridal Shower – a celebration of sisterhood for the bride. From that perspective, the Mehndi ceremony can be called World’s First bridal Shower!

    1. What was your vision for your wedding?
Our motto for our wedding was “a crazy punjabi wedding”. We both come from extremely large, Punjabi, very cultural and traditional families, which meant lots of dancing, singing, and celebrating!
Most importantly, our vision included a weekend filled with lots of emotion, lots of color, and lots of love! Fortunately, that is exactly how it played out.
    2. What was the most magical or memorable part of your day?
The most memorable part of our Wedding weekend was seeing each other at the Sikh Temple on Saturday morning. It was definitely amagical moment because it was the day we had been planning night and day for the past year! Lastly, it was a very beautiful thing to see both of our families becoming one!
    3. Why did you choose your wedding/reception dress from Silk Threads?
First off, I have known Ruby Didi since I was a little girl. I loved her style and swag! Growing up, I always bought all my Indian outfits from Silk Threads. That was definitely not going to change when I found out I was getting married.
One quality I love about Ruby Didi is that she will NEVER let you leave Silk Threads if you are not 150% happy with your outfit. That is exactly what I needed for my wedding. I knew that I could tell her my vision and she would know exactly what I wanted. She can read my mind when it comes to outfits! Lastly, I knew Silk Threads would go above and beyond for me to make sure that I looked my absolute best!
Thank you Reema and Preet, and Congratulations again!
  • Whose Sari Now?

    Whose Sari Now?

Sometimes, a catchy headline draws you into an article, and you realize that you may have missed some interesting movements, which while are not publicized widely, could create an impact in the society.

One such article caught my attention while browsing – which brought to light the movement by some Indian women to bring back the Sari (or Saree) into an everyday wear garment for the Indian women worldwide – started interestingly enough in California!

She’s part of a movement of Indian women who are bringing back the everyday wear of the sari through the 100 Sari Pact, which claimed Dec. 21 as World Sari Day.

The pact required Appanna and others to wear 100 different saris throughout 2015. She did that, celebrating the wearing of her 100th sari at a Dec. 20 “sari party” at Amber Cellar & Lounge in Los Altos. She draped invitees with saris she made.

“I love the sari,” she said. “I feel anyone can wear it – size, age, race, social standing – no bar.”

The sari (also spelled “saree”) is a South Asian garment that dates back thousands of years. A drape of cloth ranging from 5 to 9 yards long, the sari is usually wrapped around the waist with one end draped over one of the shoulders. They come in a range of fabrics, colors and designs…”

Fascinating! Good luck to Archana and team – and remember, Silk Threads not only can provide you beautiful saris in a variety of designs fore all events – from parties to weddings, but can also provide you video training on how to tie a sari.
