  • What do Gamzatti, the Indian Princess, and Silk Threads have in common?

What do Gamzatti, the Indian Princess, and Silk Threads have in common?

Here is a short interview with Roberta, mother of Eden Ryder, who competed in the semifinals of Youth America Grand Prix Ballet. Eden was looking for the costume for an Indian princess, which while looking rich and regal, would allow her to do her routine. As you can see from the pictures, we succeeded – not only is Eden looking gorgeous, but her flawless routine has taken her into the Finals!

What was the special occasion/event you were trying to find dresses for?

The Special Occasion was Youth America Grand Prix (www.yagp.org). We were looking for a costume for the Classical Ballet Variation Gamzatti from the Ballet La Bayadere. Eden was going to compete in the Dallas Semifinals. Gamzatti is an Indian Princess so we wanted to look as authentic as possible.

Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) is the world’s largest global network of dance. It fulfills its mission of dance education through scholarship auditions, master classes, alumni services, educational and outreach activities, performances, and films.

YAGP reaches over 7,000 dance students annually by holding workshops, scholarship auditions, master classes and audition classes in approximately 17 U.S cities and 6 international locations. Each season culminates in the week-long New York Finals, where more than 1,200 of the world’s most promising dancers receive in-depth mentoring and greater scholarship, professional, and performance opportunities. The New York Finals closing night “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow” Gala features the students showing the most potential alongside the stars of today’s leading dance companies.

What designs did you have in mind?

We were looking for a blouse and skirt for Eden to wear as she performed on stage. Ruby had never done a ballet costume before and was willing to work with us.

What do you like the most about Silk Threads and its staff?

Ruby and the Staff were very professional and finished the project to the very end to make sure we were happy with the final result. The quality of the pieces were outstanding, from the fabric, hand embroidery and color.

    Any tips for our readers?

Silk Threads (Ruby) is capable of creating high end designs not only for Indian Weddings but for any event. She can take a vision and bring it to life at an affordable cost.

Thank you Roberta and Eden, for the opportunity to work on

the Ballet costume – Eden, you looked gorgeous!

  • How India’s Fashion traditions made their way into the American mainstream

How India’s Fashion traditions made their way into the American mainstream

When you think about Indian-American fashion, you may picture traditional Bollywood saris, sequins, and midriff-baring crop tops with full-embellished skirts!

However, it may surprise you to know how much Indian fashion’s traditions and designs  have made its way into the American mainstream. With a rapid increase of Indian-American population, as well as Americans’ fascination for colors and designs fueled by social media, it is easy to see how this influence in fashion choices was bound to happen.

One of traditional aspects of Indian fashion is the use of embellishments – from sequins, beads and stones, done over delicate thread embroidery. Embellishments, embroidery and sequins on clothing can now be seen on almost every runway – including in collections by high-end designers such as in Dolce and Gabana and Veronica Etro’s SS16 Collection (Pictured). These unique elements on cocktail dresses and formal gowns add that extra elegance needed to make the wearer the star of the night.

You can see unique interpretations of these elements on the dresses from Ruby Bhandari’s Ruby B Collection.

The trend continues in casual wear too.

Tunics and lighter fabrics are becoming essentials in beachwear cover-ups and night-out fashion in major resort/beach vacation destinations. They are flattering on every body shape, and glide perfectly as you walk.

Ruby Bhandari’s Ruby B Tunics linehas tunics that are perfect for both the beach and night out!  You can even see the Indian inspired sparkle in this tunic here!

Crop Tops have become an American summer essential, giving us more of a reason to do those ab crunches! Pictured here is one of the more traditional looks by Silk Threads in which again, you can see the sequins and mirrors being used, along with thread embroidery.

Are these fashion trends something you’ve already adopted? We can thank the Indian-American culture for inspiring the east and west fusion of these modern day fashion trends.

    Which one is your favorite?

    Swarovski Blings Up the Orient

(Ed: Great article on the use of Swarovski crystals in Middle East and Southeast Asia. We have been using real Swarovski crystals on quite a few of our designs and bridals, with excellent results. Please contact us to setup your free consultation)

“In India and Pakistan, Swarovski waltzes a similar balancing act as it latches onto the lucrative market of bridals and traditional-wear. The market for ethnic-wear in India, running the gamut from saris to lehngas and the shalwar kameez, is growing at an annual rate of 8 percent and is expected to reach $19.6 billion by 2018, according to a report by Indiaretailing.com. The traditional bridal lehnga, with its penchant for bling, presents an ideal canvas for Swarovski detailings.

Having gained a stronghold across India over the last two decades, Swarovski collaborations also frequently veer towards Western silhouettes that are increasingly popular in Indian cities. But what makes Swarovski so tantalising to these diverse markets across the Orient?

    Local tastes through local collaborations

The quality of the embellishments is one undeniable factor. Swarovski is a global big gun with a legacy of blinging up fashion for more than a century, so designers and customers are naturally attracted to the prestige attached to the brand. Further augmenting the firm’s popularity is its many local designer collaborations supported by assertive marketing strategies.”

Rawaj Fashion Extravaganza – An Evening of Glamor to Help a Great Cause

The Rawaj Fashion Extravaganza was held in the beautiful La Cantera Hill Country Resort in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, May 15th. In addition to the breath-taking sweeping views of San Antonio from this hill top luxury resort, attendees were treated to five Fashion Shows showcasing diverse and renowned fashion designers.

The headline fashion shows were presented by designers Cesar Galindo from New York and Ruby Bhandari from Dallas, Texas.

For the last twenty-two years, Cesar has balanced his time designing his own collection as well as working as a contract designer for established labels including Dolce & Gabbana and Calvin Klein Collection, as well as L.A.M.B., a contemporary women’s collection launched by Gwen Stefani. He was recently seen on Bravo TV on The Fashion Show, the successor to The Project Runway show. His collection at Rawaj consisted of dresses which showcased femininity, with architecturally draped hems and necklines – featuring a rich color palette – inherent of Galindo’s designs.

Ruby Bhandari’s Silk Threads line provides a gorgeous juxtaposition of mystical eastern traditional designs with contemporary western lifestyle. Her custom bridal designs for private clients have dazzled countless weddings around the country for over twenty years, as well as celebrities from Hollywood and Bollywood. She showcased her ethnicwear and dress collection at Rawaj – which highlighted delicate embroideries, a bold color palette and sensuous cuts. In addition, she featured several designs from her men’s custom line called theSOCIALList, which was an elegant interpretation of men’s fusion wear with traditional Indian touches.

The finale fashion show was by Dallas-based Pink Chiffon, which featured a gorgeous white piece from Pakistani designer, Ayesha Somaya.

Proceeds from Rawaj benefitted the Children’s Shelter of San Antonio, which has been providing a safe haven for child survivors of abuse, neglect, and abandonment in San Antonio since 1901. The Children’s Shelter is a trauma-informed care certified organization that provides a continuum of care through their family of services like emergency shelter for children in crisis and helping children find permanent homes through foster care and adoption.

As the organizer of the Rawaj Fashion Extravaganza, Ayesha Zaheer, said, “This evening was a great way to expose San Antonio to some of the finest designers from around the country, while benefitting a noble cause. We hope to continue this tradition of giving back to the community in various ways, including fashion”.

Events that depicted our relationship – #RealBride Roshni

Bride and Groom: Roshni Bedi & Jaspreet Singh

    Location of the wedding: Dallas

    Photographer: MnMfoto

    1. What was your vision for your wedding?

Our vision for our wedding was simple and elegant. We wanted to preserve as much Indian tradition as possible while still adding a whimsical and romantic element to it. With the help of our vendors, and most of all, our parents, we were really able to put together a series of events that depicted our relationship and our vision for the wedding very well.

    2. What was the most magical or memorable part of your day?

For us, the moment after the ceremony

when we first looked at each other as husband and wife was very special. It just felt like everything came together at that one moment: all the months of planning, the years of long distance, and all the anticipation leading up to it. It was what we had been waiting for, to finally share our lives together as husband and wife. Of course, we can’t forget our reception. Enjoying those moments with our close friends and family who came from all over the world just to celebrate us was so much fun and something we will never forget.

    3. Why did you choose your wedding/reception dress from Silk Threads?

Jaspreet has known Ruby & Raj for a long time and she is a family friend. Jaspreet’s mom has worked with Ruby for quite some time as well. So, when it was time to buy outfits for our wedding it was our first instinct to go to Silk Threads. Picking the outfits for the wedding is a stressful process so it was important for us to go to someone we can trust and whose designs we loved. Silk Threads fulfilled both of those criterion.

Thank you Roshni & Jaspreet, and congratulations again! (p.s We loved all the wedding functions!)

    1. What was your vision for your wedding?
Our motto for our wedding was “a crazy punjabi wedding”. We both come from extremely large, Punjabi, very cultural and traditional families, which meant lots of dancing, singing, and celebrating!
Most importantly, our vision included a weekend filled with lots of emotion, lots of color, and lots of love! Fortunately, that is exactly how it played out.
    2. What was the most magical or memorable part of your day?
The most memorable part of our Wedding weekend was seeing each other at the Sikh Temple on Saturday morning. It was definitely amagical moment because it was the day we had been planning night and day for the past year! Lastly, it was a very beautiful thing to see both of our families becoming one!
    3. Why did you choose your wedding/reception dress from Silk Threads?
First off, I have known Ruby Didi since I was a little girl. I loved her style and swag! Growing up, I always bought all my Indian outfits from Silk Threads. That was definitely not going to change when I found out I was getting married.
One quality I love about Ruby Didi is that she will NEVER let you leave Silk Threads if you are not 150% happy with your outfit. That is exactly what I needed for my wedding. I knew that I could tell her my vision and she would know exactly what I wanted. She can read my mind when it comes to outfits! Lastly, I knew Silk Threads would go above and beyond for me to make sure that I looked my absolute best!
Thank you Reema and Preet, and Congratulations again!
