Indian Clothes Dallas: What to Wear to a Luxury Indian Wedding in Jaipur (Real Client Story)

When you receive an invitation to a luxury Indian wedding, the excitement is immediate but so is the confusion, especially when you’re trying to find the right Indian clothes in Dallas without knowing what’s appropriate.

    What should you actually wear?

Indian weddings are not just one event. They are a series of celebrations, each with its own style, setting, and expectations. For someone attending for the first time, it can feel overwhelming to plan outfits that fit every occasion.

That’s exactly what one of our clients experienced before attending a destination wedding in Jaipur.

    A Real Client Experience

Cindy O’Connor and her husband were invited to a traditional North Indian wedding in Jaipur but had no idea what to wear.

Instead of taking chances, they decided to visit Silk Threads in Dallas and that decision made all the difference.

Cindy shared that from their very first visit, the experience felt completely different from regular shopping. They weren’t just shown outfits they were guided through what to wear for each event.

Ruby and Rishika spent hours helping them understand the different functions and how to dress for each one. They also made sure their outfits complemented each other as a couple, which made the overall look more put together.

    Getting Every Detail Right

Cindy also highlighted how much attention was given to the smaller details.

From selecting outfits to pairing them with the right accessories, everything was carefully considered. Shoes and jewellery were chosen to match each look so that nothing felt incomplete. There was no rush during the process. Time was taken to make sure each decision felt right before moving forward.

    The Importance of Proper Fit

One of the most important parts of their experience was the focus on fit.

Cindy mentioned that alterations were done to ensure every outfit fit perfectly. Additional time was spent making adjustments so that everything looked and felt right.

This attention to fit made a clear difference when it came to wearing the outfits at the wedding.

    Dressing for Different Wedding Events

Indian weddings include multiple events, and each one requires a different approach to dressing.

With the right guidance, this became simple instead of overwhelming. Each outfit was chosen based on the specific event, ensuring it felt appropriate without being overdone.

For daytime functions, the styling was lighter and more comfortable.

    The Experience at the Wedding

At the wedding, everything came together exactly as planned. Cindy shared that they received many compliments throughout the celebration and were often asked where they had shopped.

The outfits not only looked good but felt right for every event, which made the entire experience more enjoyable.

One detail that stood out was that she was able to wear her outfit again later, which added even more value to the purchase.

Why Guidance Matters When Choosing Indian Clothes

This experience highlights something important buying Indian outfits is different from regular shopping.

For many people searching for Indian clothes in Dallas, the challenge is not just finding the right design, but understanding how to wear it for the right occasion.

Having the right guidance ensures that everything from outfit selection to final styling comes together seamlessly.

  • Ruby Bhandari’s Silk Threads

HOW RUBY BHANDARI TURNED HER PASSION INTO A BUSINESS

I arrive at the Dallas-based Silk Threads studio in the middle of a crazy week; they are preparing for an impending charity gala and a fashion show in Las Vegas. Nevertheless, Silk Threads founder Ruby Bhandari greets me with a huge hug as if we are long-departed friends and treats me to the most divine Indian whipped coffee I’ve ever tasted.

Ruby quickly returns to pulling silk and sequined gowns off the rack for a woman with a distinct TV voice and personality: LeeAnne Locken, one of the Real Housewives of Dallas and the emcee for the eighth annual Silk Threads Charity Gala.

As LeeAnne twirls in one of the exquisite gowns, Ruby looks on with a seasoned eye and smiles.

“I used to think that my design inspiration only came from flowers, gardens and architecture,” Ruby says. “Now, everything is interesting. From the river flowing over rocks, to the carpet we’re standing on that I’ve had for 12 years. Suddenly that motif may be exactly what I need on a sleeve.”

Ruby points out a gold elephant statuette decked in tiny jewels. It stood almost unnoticed on a powder blue shelf in Ruby’s studio for 20 years until one day, it inspired her to design a long, white silk jacket with glistening embroidered elephants parading around the hem.

Such artistry is woven into every gown, jacket, sari and shoe at Silk Threads. The prints, the fabric, the textures and the embroidery are all authentically Indian.

Silk Threads began 25 years ago as the answer to an unmet need among second-generation Indians in America who were growing up without access to the designs of their homeland. The business has now extended its line of fusion fashion to anyone who wants something a little different—something fabulous.

“We Dallasites like our big hair and makeup,” Ruby says. “We’re a little more flamboyant than most. My clients want to look good and be different.”

    THE BEGINNING OF SILK THREADS

And it all began in the trunk of a college student’s car. In 1989, as Ruby prepared to go to the The University of Texas at Austin, her father asked what she planned to do for a living. She initially said social work.

Her father had other plans; he said she could study engineering, law, pre-med or business. They compromised on a degree in finance and accounting.

“I’ve always wanted to help other people,” Ruby says, “and I’ve always had a passion for fashion.”

Ruby met her husband, Raj Bhandari, when she was a freshman. At that time, there were very few Indian clothing companies in the U.S., so when they travelled to India to meet Raj’s family, Ruby designed some clothes of her own. She assembled them with the available materials that her future mother-in-law had showed her in a tour of New Dehli, and brought the finished garments back to home to the States to sell.

She began selling the clothes out of the trunk of her car, all while finishing school.

“We lived in a very small, old apartment. We paid about $300 a month,” Ruby recalls with a grin. “Soon, we bought a brand new white Lexus Sports Coupe. I put the clothes into that trunk. It looked so much prettier in presentation, and everyone thought ‘Wow, she’s only been in this business for two years, and she’s already successful!’ My trunk was empty at the end of every week.”

Later, however, when sales dwindled, she realized she needed new customers. Ruby and her husband went to a tiny local Indian grocery store with a rack of clothing.

“My first weekend, I only sold three outfits. And my clothes smelled of Indian Masalas,” Ruby says. “I went home in tears. My bubble had burst … but my husband was so amazing.”

Raj said to her, “We’re going back next weekend, and I will stand with you.” The second weekend they sold five outfits. Sales slowly grew, and finally they exploded.

On one of the couple’s later visits to India, Ruby started working with her sister-in-law to open a fabric company and manufacturing units in India.

“We knew there would be a lot of trade involved,” Raj says. “However, we underestimated the amount of effort we needed to do it.”

Every garment imported to the U.S. needs a label classifying the material and where it’s from. In 1991, when Ruby sent her first shipment of clothing back to the U.S. it was halted at customs in DFW. Of the 240 garments she shipped, none of them had the required tags.

“My stuff was going to be stuck at the airport for 10 days. Storage fees were $50 a day. At that time, that was a lot of money.”

A sympathetic customs officer gave Ruby the idea to buy her own labels and write on them with a permanent parker.

“My wonderful friend Gauri helped me, in 25-degree temperature [inside the warehouse]!” Ruby says. “We had our gloves on and our needles and markers in hand. We hand-wrote 240 tags: ‘100% silk, made in India, dry clean only.’ We’d take off our gloves and stitch a few tags. We’d put our gloves back on so we could feel our fingers again, then we’d stitch some more. I’ll never forget that.”

SILK THREADS, ALMOST THREE DECADES LATER

Today, Silk Threads has full dress, tunic and bridal lines (all of which have their tags!) and serves a wide variety of clients across the country. Ruby travels extensively throughout the year, and her products can be found in over 400 stores. Silk Threads even has a show room at the Dallas World Trade Center.

Their success has enabled the Bhandaris to help people—just like Ruby had always wanted.

In October, Silk Threads celebrated their 8th annual charity gala and, as a result, they have been able to set up a UTD scholarship for the arts to support enterprising young artists.

“If you have passion for something, you can probably go for it. But having the correct knowledge, the correct management and a plan are so important,” Ruby says. “There’s so much unhappiness out there. The way to create happiness is to follow your passion.”

  • From Bollywood to Hollywood: Fashion, Diversity, Charity

From Bollywood to Hollywood: Fashion, Diversity, Charity

This is a post taken from the blog by Donna Arp Weitzman, author and socialite. Thank you, Donna, for the kind words!

If you know me, you know my closet. It’s large, filled to the brim, and coated in all colors and fabrics. I am a lover of fashion, how it makes me feel, and the confidence the right scarf and pair of shoes can give to someone. I’m always willing to try new looks, especially unique ones, so any opportunity to be involved in a style-related something, I’ll take it. Enter my friend and Dallas designer Ruby Bhandari of Silk Threads.

Lately, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know this fashion queen, who takes her Indian culture and infuses it into her couture designs. I’ve tried on multiple custom-beaded pieces designed by her, as well as worked with her on a podcast and a few videos, all of which got me hooked on her collection (and just her in general).

Coming up in October, Ruby will be putting her designs to a good cause through the 8th Annual Silk Threads Fashion Show Charity Gala, with celebrity emcee LeeAnne Locken of the Real Housewives of Dallas. Not only is this a fun event that flashes some style via runway, but it’s for a good cause. The beneficiary non-profit for the gala will be the Asia Center at the The University of Texas at Dallas, with all proceeds going toward establishing an Arts-related scholarship at the school.

    Fashion in Film

This year, the gala’s theme highlights the impact of fashion on cinema under the title, “From Bollywood to Hollywood.” Fashion in cinema has come so far, from the western influence in the Indian movies of the seventies and eighties, to the use of traditional Indian motifs and embroideries in current Hollywood productions.

Ruby’s designs, which are inspired by her Indian culture, add diversity in design to the Dallas fashion scene and industry in general, and I believe the gala will be the perfect opportunity to bring these two themes together into one.

    Fashion Show Details

The show will take place at the Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center at UTD, October 14th, with the VIP Networking Event starting at 7:30pm and the main show at 8:45pm. Tickets are now available at www.silkthreadsfundraiser.com. General Admission tickets start at $75 per person. VIP Tickets are available at $150 per person, which includes entry to the VIP Event, drinks, heavy hors d’oeuvres and other VIP perks.

  • What do Gamzatti, the Indian Princess, and Silk Threads have in common?

What do Gamzatti, the Indian Princess, and Silk Threads have in common?

Here is a short interview with Roberta, mother of Eden Ryder, who competed in the semifinals of Youth America Grand Prix Ballet. Eden was looking for the costume for an Indian princess, which while looking rich and regal, would allow her to do her routine. As you can see from the pictures, we succeeded – not only is Eden looking gorgeous, but her flawless routine has taken her into the Finals!

What was the special occasion/event you were trying to find dresses for?

The Special Occasion was Youth America Grand Prix (www.yagp.org). We were looking for a costume for the Classical Ballet Variation Gamzatti from the Ballet La Bayadere. Eden was going to compete in the Dallas Semifinals. Gamzatti is an Indian Princess so we wanted to look as authentic as possible.

Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) is the world’s largest global network of dance. It fulfills its mission of dance education through scholarship auditions, master classes, alumni services, educational and outreach activities, performances, and films.

YAGP reaches over 7,000 dance students annually by holding workshops, scholarship auditions, master classes and audition classes in approximately 17 U.S cities and 6 international locations. Each season culminates in the week-long New York Finals, where more than 1,200 of the world’s most promising dancers receive in-depth mentoring and greater scholarship, professional, and performance opportunities. The New York Finals closing night “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow” Gala features the students showing the most potential alongside the stars of today’s leading dance companies.

What designs did you have in mind?

We were looking for a blouse and skirt for Eden to wear as she performed on stage. Ruby had never done a ballet costume before and was willing to work with us.

What do you like the most about Silk Threads and its staff?

Ruby and the Staff were very professional and finished the project to the very end to make sure we were happy with the final result. The quality of the pieces were outstanding, from the fabric, hand embroidery and color.

    Any tips for our readers?

Silk Threads (Ruby) is capable of creating high end designs not only for Indian Weddings but for any event. She can take a vision and bring it to life at an affordable cost.

  • Ruby Made Us Into Gems – first time introduction to Indian Fashion in Dallas!

Ruby Made Us Into Gems – first time introduction to Indian Fashion in Dallas!

As Dallasites, we all know about the upcoming “The Pin Show 2017” fashion show, and that Ruby Bhandari of Silk Threads is one of the featured designers. Ahead of the show, we wanted to know more about Indian-inspired fashion and share our Silk Threads experience –  read on for our experience…

In the minds of many, there is a distinct cultural divide when it comes to fashion, but Ruby is determined to break that mold. She’s infusing Eastern trends and designs into Western fashion, and we love it.

We were thrilled to have the opportunity for an exclusive look at the Silk Threads boutique. While there, we learned a lot about the different categories of clothing, such as everyday wear, traditional pieces, or special occasions, like weddings. Here’s just a peak at our fun:

    Traditional Indian Designs

Not having the cultural background and exposure to garments inspired by Indian culture, we jumped at the chance to try on gorgeous pieces for ourselves. From the beginning, Ruby gave us insight into our body types, helping us figure out what works best with our unique shapes. With expertise in customized couture dresses based on individuals’ bodies, Ruby made us feel beautiful in our own ways.

Amshi and Rachel both opted for pieces from the Ethnicwear line. Amshi (in red) in a Lehenga, and Rachel (in white) in a Salwar Kameez.

    Bridal Wear

What girl doesn’t love weddings? Upon finding out that Silk Threads had an entire room devoted to bridal fashion, we all made a bee-line to that room, and it. was. gorgeous! There was everything from traditional Eastern bridal garments to out-of-the box and beautifully ornate, intricate designs, to more Westernized Indian bridal garments.

While we didn’t try on any of the bridal collection, we did get to experience just how heavy the elaborate gowns are (full arm workout worthy). Here we are holding three of the heaviest pieces in the whole store – all a part of the bridalcollection.

    Ruby B Collection

For the Westerner who doesn’t get the occasion to don a custom traditional piece, the Ruby B Collection of Tunics and Dresses are to die for. Whether you are looking for a chic cocktail dress or a unique piece to pair with jeans, there is seriously something for everyone.

Sarah loved this piece she’s showcasing so much that she couldn’t part with it, and it has found a new home in her closet.

    Couture Meets Confidence

For a few hours, we were able to play dress up with the real deal. Not only did we feel like a better version of ourselves, but we left with more confidence and creative insight when it comes to our style going forward.
