Bride and Groom’s names:  Seema and Jack

Location of the wedding:  Hyatt Zilara Cancun
    Photographer: Great Events Studio

ST:  What was the special occasion you were trying to find dresses for? What designs did you have in mind?

SJ: I was looking for an outfit for my reception.

ST: What brought you to Silk Threads?

SJ: My Mom had heard about Silk Threads through her friends and heard that the dresses were hand selected and curated by Ruby and brought from India’s best designers!

So she had me visit… I was honestly not looking to get any more outfits for my wedding because we had bought a few in India.

I was pleasantly surprised with the incredible selection they had for wedding dresses . I wanted something that was a knockout for the reception. I wanted something modern and unique with bright colors and that could be worn for other occasions (just the top or bottom).

ST: What do you like the most about Silk Threads and its staff?
SJ: I loved how Ruby took hours of her time to find the perfect dress for me and the time she spent making sure the alterations fit just right for me. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.

ST:  Any tips for our readers?
SJ: The jewelry they have to match with any outfit you are looking for is fantastic. The staff and Ruby are honest with their opinions and helped me find the best dress for me! So grateful that we found them because my dress was a show stopper.

Thank you Seema – we loved working with you and your parents!

    Secret Reception Outfits!

Bride & groom reception outfitsST:  What was the special occasion you were trying to find dresses for? What designs did you have in mind?

H&Z: We were looking for reception dresses for our wedding. We wanted to use the family color, crimson, and new that a half saree was what I needed to get, since my husbands family is South Indian. What we didn’t expect was for my husband to find his outfit that matched perfectly! As much as everyone loved my wedding dress, our reception outfits stole the show! We kept our change of clothes a secret and got to surprise everyone when we walked in to the reception venue.

ST: What brought you to Silk Threads?

H&Z: We drove 3 hours to look for outfits, and heard AMAZING things about Silk Threads and their expertise. As soon as we walked in, we knew we’d never go anywhere else for our occasion wear. Ruby sat with us for at least an hour going through every detail of our day and what would be best for us. Her attention to detail was everything! Her commitment to making sure everything was perfect and came in on time for our big day meant so much to us. And just in time, everything came in and fit perfectly!

ST: What do you like the most about Silk Threads and its staff?

H&Z:: Everyone was so kind and ready to help us at every turn, including all of my calls to make sure everything was coming in for the wedding day.

ST:  Any tips for our readers?

H&Z:: I would recommend going in with an open mind. My husband was pretty stubborn about wearing pink, but listened to Ruby and was so thankful in the end. I had some knowledge about Indian occasion wear but learned so much in meeting with Ruby. I decided to trust the expert and am so glad I did! It’s hands down my favorite thing I’ve ever worn!

Thank you Haley & Zazanya – we loved working with you!

Location of the wedding:  Dallas Metroplex

ST:  What was the special occasion you were trying to find dresses for? What designs did you have in mind?

SS I was looking for dresses to wear to my wedding and to my mehndi function. I knew I wanted to wear a salwar kameez for my wedding day, but beyond that I was clueless.

ST: What brought you to Silk Threads?
SS: Someone at my gurdwara recommended Ruby’s store, and my sister-in-law had searched for Indian dress shops in the area and said Silk Threads looked like the best place to start.

ST: What do you like the most about Silk Threads and its staff?
KB: I liked how helpful everyone at Silk Threads was. I am not Indian, and I knew next to nothing about Indian fashion—especially for weddings! Ruby and the team were all so great at helping me figure out what styles I wanted. I ended up bringing in my mom and sisters to get their wedding outfits from Silk Threads as well.

ST:  Any tips for our readers?
SS: If you don’t know what you want, or only have a slight idea, just ask! Silk Threads has beautiful clothes, and everyone there is very knowledgeable and helpful. We were able to order outfits for both my plus size and petite family members, and everyone looked gorgeous.

Thank you Samantha – we loved working with you!

KB: I was looking for a suit for my wedding. I knew I wanted something different but classy. I had been searching for sherwani’s for some time, however as a “big guy” it was more challenging than I anticipated.

ST: What brought you to Silk Threads?
KB: I did a Google search for some places that sell Indian attire and chose Silk Threads because the energy, helpfulness and willingness to assist a total novice was very welcoming and comforting.

ST: What do you like the most about Silk Threads and its staff?
KB: What I liked most about Silk Threads and their staff was the fact that I was given honest feedback and I felt heard. I didn’t feel like I was in another suit shop with a person just trying to make a sale. The Silk Threads team really cares about what you want.

ST:  Any tips for our readers?
KB: Main tip, if you are on a weightless or health journey, be mindful that the alterations can be done, but its best to communicate your journey so they can help you accomplish the style goal you desire.

Thank you Ken – we loved working with you!

Indian fashion designers face eco-chic dilemma

At last month’s Lakmé Fashion Week in India, conversations about making fashion more sustainable took centre-stage. But are the country’s designers ready for this?

The four-day event – organised jointly by beauty company Lakmé, billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Brands and the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) – is one of Indian fashion’s biggest highlights.

While it had all the essential ingredients – glittering catwalks, clinking wine glasses and fashionistas in the front row – what grabbed eyeballs was a competition encouraging young designers to use eco-friendly materials to create outfits. The event is part of a wider ambition among Indian designers aiming to make sustainability the driving factor of their businesses.

  • The Fashionista Event of the Year!

The Fashionista Event of the Year!

The Fashionista event of the year – that is what one of the attendees called the Eighth Annual Silk Threads Charity Gala on Oct 14th. The event benefited the Asia Center at University of Dallas, and was held at the new Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center on UTD campus.

The morning started with an interview of Ruby Bhandari, CEO of Silk Threads, on Fox4 News, talking about the event and giving a sneak peek of what to expect.

The evening weather was perfect for the gala – clear skies, and pleasant – and the location was sparkling. The decor, provided by Decor by Faiza, was fabulous and matched the colorful theme – which was the influence of fashion on cinema. This year again saw a sold-out crowd of Dallas’ who’s-who come out dressed in their finest.

By 6:30 pm, everyone was in place, with volunteers and wait staff looking sharp dressed in black, the drink sponsors Kruto vodka, Ironroot Republic Gin and Bourbon, and Topo Chico, as well as food sponsors The Gardens Restaurant and Bombay Chopstix ready and waiting for the guests. A dessert table was setup inside the hall, featuring Indian sweets from Royal Sweets and pastries from Delicious Cakes.

The VIP reception started at 7 pm, with guests mingling, photographers busily clicking, and bloggers live-blogging. Quite a few of the local media personalities were present from organizations like Fox, ABC, TV Asia and Dallas Morning News.

The show itself was divided into multiple segments, showing the progression of fashion from 70’s to modern day, and the influence of Hollywood on Indian cinema to begin with, and how the trend has slightly reversed nowadays. Over 40 models from different agencies, including Bella Modeling School, participated in the show. Ruby Bhandari, the Chief Designer of Silk Threads, created different looks to highlight this underlying theme, and each of her pieces drew appreciation from the crowd.

The Master of Ceremonies was LeeAnn Locken, the star of Bravo TV’s Real Housewives of Dallas. The show was kicked off by a mesmerizing song by a local singer, Priyanka. LeeAnn kept the crowd entertained, as the models changed between segments.

Terry Gajraj, the famous Indo-Carribbean singer from New York, performed a song – his take on the famous “Om Shanti Om” song from a Bollywood movie, which really got the crowd in the mood. Terry was brought to Dallas by the Platinum Sponsor of the Gala, Pete Persaud Productions, which is also shooting a music video with Terry in Dallas.

The final segment was themed “The Monsoon Wedding“, which showcased the men’s and women’s bridal line from Ruby Bhandari. All the pieces in the line were head-turners, with attendees mentally booking some of the pieces for themselves.

The party wasn’t over yet. Outspoken Visions Entertainment and DJ Raj from Stereo Nation LA took over from here, and brought the crowd to their feet – dancing away till it was closing time!

This event raised more funds than any of Silk Threads’ previous Galas – and all proceeds are being used to setup a scholarship at UTD. As Sanjeeb Samanta, one of the guests, said “Great event!

I know it takes a lot to put these together and the amount of planning that goes into it. Your team did great and the designs and show was impressive. As an alum of UTD, thanks for supporting one of our programs. As an active leader in the DFW non-profit community, thank you for your compassion and generosity every year to support different causes and groups.

We need more people in the DFW community with your heart and will”!

Ruby Bhandari, CEO of Silk Threads said, ” Thanks to all our guests, volunteers and sponsors for their effort to provide educational opportunities for the needy. We are amazed at the support, and this is what keeps us trying to raise the bar for our events every year”.

  • Swarovski Blings Up the Orient

    Swarovski Blings Up the Orient

(Ed: Great article on the use of Swarovski crystals in Middle East and Southeast Asia. We have been using real Swarovski crystals on quite a few of our designs and bridals, with excellent results. Please contact us to setup your free consultation)

“In India and Pakistan, Swarovski waltzes a similar balancing act as it latches onto the lucrative market of bridals and traditional-wear. The market for ethnic-wear in India, running the gamut from saris to lehngas and the shalwar kameez, is growing at an annual rate of 8 percent and is expected to reach $19.6 billion by 2018, according to a report by Indiaretailing.com. The traditional bridal lehnga, with its penchant for bling, presents an ideal canvas for Swarovski detailings.

Having gained a stronghold across India over the last two decades, Swarovski collaborations also frequently veer towards Western silhouettes that are increasingly popular in Indian cities. But what makes Swarovski so tantalising to these diverse markets across the Orient?

    Local tastes through local collaborations

The quality of the embellishments is one undeniable factor. Swarovski is a global big gun with a legacy of blinging up fashion for more than a century, so designers and customers are naturally attracted to the prestige attached to the brand. Further augmenting the firm’s popularity is its many local designer collaborations supported by assertive marketing strategies.”

He actually cried when he saw me for the first time in my bridal Lehenga – #RealBride Sheeba

Bride & groom’s names: Sheeba Fernandez and Alan Turner
    Location of the wedding: Dallas
    1. What was your vision for your wedding?
My vision was to capture my culture and its beauty in an elegant way!
    2. What was the most magical or memorable part of your day?
My husband is a Caucasian American and he had no clue I was going to wear a bridal Lehenga. He actually cried when he saw me the first time in the Lehenga. He said it took his breath away, and that I looked regal and elegant in my ethnic outfit. He was over the moon that I wore a bridal Lehenga and not a gown!
    3. Why did you choose your wedding/reception dress from Silk Threads?
As I was looking online for wedding Lehengas, the only ones that caught my attention were the at Silk Threads – but I didn’t  want to spend a whole lot on it.
Fortunately, a friend of mine knew someone who knows Ruby well.
Thanks to her for encouraging me to set up an appointment with Ruby, because she assured me that Ruby would take care of me and design my dream lehenga, and still work within my budget.
Though I paid a little more than I had planned to, it was well worth it because Ruby gave me much more than what I had expected!
She did an outstanding job on helping me find the perfect lehenga that made me look like an extraordinary bride and that was my goal to begin with!
I only had two months to plan my wedding. Ruby and Madhu made the experience so relaxing and stress-free by assisting me with every detail from my Lehenga, to the perfect fit, to picking out the jewelry…
Not everyone gets a second shot at life. I was fortunate I did, and this time I got much more than what I had anticipated, thanks to my sweet Ruby and Madhu!
I’ve fallen in love with Silk Threads but more so because of the team that works there and the quality of what they offer is simply priceless!
They are genuine people that care and take pride and joy in what they do and the results on the most important day of your life simply shows!
Thank you Ruby and Madhu for making all my dreams of being a beautiful Indian bride come true!
